Weedhoppers are designed well and have passed the test of time. But there is always a small chance that something could go wrong that makes flying impossible. If that happens I will be glad to have a BRS.
Unlike a normal parachute this Ballistic Recovery System attaches to my weedhopper (not to me), and has a rocket to assist deployment. In a serious emergency I will pull the hadle to launch the rocket. The rocket pulls the parachute from the cannister out into the air stream where it is inflated. If everything works correctly both my Weedhopper and I will then descend to the ground at about 10mph.
I was a little suprised to get a 'kit' that needed to be assembled.
But, I think I put it together correctly ;)
My BRS 500 Cannister installation:
The Kevlar bridal connects to the front of the root tube at the motor mount (right in front of the the wing):
It runs down the center of my wings
and connects with the rear and top bridal with a steel link.
The cannister with parachute and rocket are mounted to my root tube just behind the wing.
Somebody suggested that the link that sits on my wing could eventually wear the sail where it rubs. I used heavy-duty velcro to hold everything in place.
